Date: 05/11/2024

Uswetakeyyawa, Sri Lanka – October 26, 2024 – The Saegis Leos were at the heart of a significant environmental conservation effort, organizing a major beach cleanup at Uswetakeyyawa Beach on Saturday, October 26th. The "Zero Plastic 2024" initiative, which kicked off at 10:00 AM, was a powerful collaborative service project dedicated to protecting Sri Lanka's stunning coastline.

Demonstrating the spirit of partnership, the Saegis Leos successfully joined forces with MAS Active, the University of Kelaniya, the Navinna Cricket Team, and the Zero Plastic Movement. The unified mission was to combat plastic pollution directly, restoring the natural splendor of Uswetakeyyawa Beach and ensuring the health of its marine life.

This initiative is a direct contribution to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It actively supports SDG 14: Life Below Water by preventing plastic waste from entering the ocean and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by enhancing a public natural space. Furthermore, it underscores the critical importance of SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, demonstrating how collaborative action can drive meaningful environmental change.

A dedicated team of 11 Leo members from Saegis worked tirelessly alongside other volunteers. Their collective effort not only resulted in a visibly cleaner and safer beach but also served as a beacon of hope and a call to action for the wider community.

"Witnessing different sectors—from corporate entities and academic institutions to sports teams and youth clubs—unite for a single cause was truly inspiring," said a representative from the Saegis Leos. "This is more than just a cleanup; it's a statement. We are committed to being part of the solution, and today's success at Uswetakeyyawa is a testament to what we can achieve together for a greener, cleaner future."

The "Zero Plastic 2024" event stands as a powerful reminder that every piece of plastic removed from our environment is a step toward a healthier planet. The organizers extend their gratitude to all participants and partners and encourage everyone to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives.
